Sports accidents are often the cause of severe injuries of teeth and jaws.

An individual sports mouthguard can prevent possible injuries effectively. Scientific studies show that 13% to 39% of all occurring tooth and jaw injuries occur during sports. In about 80% of the dental injury cases, the upper incisors are mostly affected. It often occurs with the loss of one or more teeth, resulting is in lifelong dental care.

mouthguardsThe mouth guard is an effective, yet simple prevention measure and comparative statistics show that the risk can be reduced by a factor of 60%.  In addition, the likelihood of injury to the surrounding soft tissues (lips, tongue) and the jaw joints is greatly reduced. Another important function of the mouthguard is in the interception of the forces which are transferred to the lower jaw, and from there to the skull. Therefore, the risk of a concussion is reduced considerably. The German Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (DGZMK) recommends wearing a mouthguard in the following sports: inline skating, hockey, skate boarding, basketball, boxing and other martial arts, hockey, baseball, football, gymnastics, handball, cycling (especially mountain biking), horse riding, rugby, American football and water polo.

Allergy- (Greek: foreign reaction) an excessive immune response of the immune system to specific and usually harmless environmental substances (allergens), which often associated with inflammatory processes symptoms.

Nickel is one of the most common causes of allergies. Typical signs of nickel allergy are inflammatory reactions of the skin in the contact area. The increase in nickel allergies in children and adolescents is mainly due to the increased use of costume jewelry, earrings or piercings. If, after insertion of an orthodontic appliance to an allergic reaction, it usually observed only extra-oral lesions: inflamed, cracked lips, eczema on the face and extremities. In the mouth, allergic reactions are rarely detectable; occasionally shows redness or swelling of the mucous membrane. Evidence of a nickel allergy patch test is carried out with the (patch test) by a dermatologist.

With proven nickel allergy we can plan an orthodontic treatment with alternative materials: eg Ceramic or titanium brackets and special treatment arcs (eg Biostarter-arms-Cosmetic).

About two million people in Germany suffer from a latex allergy, which can cause itchy hands or skin rash. Latex is obtained from the rubber tree. Its juice contains more than 240 different proteins, which can trigger an allergic reaction in humans. People who suffer from latex allergies should avoid direct skin contact with latex-containing materials in order to prevent allergic reactions like skin rash.

As part of our quality management system we use in our practice exclusively non-latex gloves.

Important note: If your child has an allergy, please notify us on our medical history form. Thank you!

For children there are a number of different removable devices that can be used depending on the case. If the teeth are tilted or the jaw needs to be widened, we typically use active plates come (also called Schwarz’sche plates). It is composed of colored plastic brackets, and may be implemented into the small screws and springs.

If the position of the upper and lower jaw relative to one another is not correct, the bite can be normalized by a functional orthodontic appliance. These devices include the activator and Bionator.

In addition to the correction of the bite, individual tooth movement, or the widening of a jaw, we use the dual feed plate (also called S-II apparatus) and the push-back double plate (S-III apparatus) by Professor FG Sander.

Fixed braces (multi-band technique) remain fixed for the duration of active treatment in the mouth. Experience has shown that the active treatment lasts 12 to 24 months. The fixed braces are made before all of brackets that are glued with a special dental adhesive to the teeth. In the brackets there is a small slit (slot) into which a wire (treatment sheet) is inserted. This wire extends around the entire dental arch and is bent behind the last teeth. The slot bracket receives the information where the teeth need to move.

When comparing brackets and treatment sheets, there is a large difference in quality.

We are heavily involved in the development of new materials and tools. So we can always offer our patients the best possible care to correct misaligned teeth gently and effectively. A successful development of our world is the “Biostarter”, a special treatment arc enabling a particularly gentle start to the treatment.

Even at a young age, malocclusion can occur. Therefore, orthodontics can control the dentition over time. By the age of 9 years old, a child should be evaluated by an orthodontist to detect any existing tooth or jaw misalignment.

We will only begin with the treatment only if it appears medically necessary, to ensure thatw we do not unnecessarily burden the child. After the initial examination we can determine if an orthodontic treatment is too early and set the appropriate date for treatment. This approach allows for a shorter treatment time and a minimal burden on the teeth and jaw.

As a rule, the best time for the start of treatment is between the ages of 10 and 12. Setting the foundation for a bright and healthy smile is our number one priority.
